I have to thank you for your letter of the 14th Ultimo addressed to my London agents Messrs Trass and Taylor in reply to their letter to you of the 13th March with reference to the claim of Mr Howard and myself to compensation for losses sustained by Praya Reclamation:

By the last mail I sent to Messrs Trass and Taylor a Petition by Mr Howard and myself addressed to His Majesty the King praying for relief and redress.

From the Petition you will see that our claim is in accordance with the promise of Governor Des Voeux before the Praya Reclamation was passed. The chief object I have in addressing you today is that Mr. Howard is so unwell that it is necessary for him to leave here at the earliest possible moment.

If you would be good enough to wire the Government here the decision of His Majesty in the matter it would enable Mr Howard to leave immediately afterwards,

I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant
Matthew F. D. Stephens
